    Asbestos kills. It just kills a lot slower than other deadly materials.

    The latency period of mesothelioma and other related diseases can be more than 50 years, though they typically develop 30-40 years after exposure to airborne asbestos. This is arguably one of the reasons it took so long for asbestos to be officially recognised as a health danger, and why action to mitigate that danger lagged.
